Résumé En

Liane Lefaivre & Alexander Tzonis : Geometry of sentiment and therapeutic landscapes. This article investigates the theory of the therapeutic function of landscapes at the end of the 18th Century in France and England. Such a theory was possible because the garden had by then lost all archaic references to the doctrine of macrocosmic-microcosmic correspondence, Platonic ideas of beauty, astrology and allegory. Equally important was the spread of the mechanistic model of the psyche. The garden could be seen as a spectacle capable of provoking positive or negative sentiments. Hence its use for psychologically therapeutic purposes. The old formal gardens were criticised for their artificial geometric order ; but the new «natural » landscape was in fact based on the antithesis of the previous shapes.
