Résumé En

Jean-Michel Raynaud : Mimesis and philosophy. An approach to Voltairean philosophical narratives. An analysis of the reader's approach to this ill-defined literary genre, with in particular a discussion of the Relation de la maladie ...du jésuite Bert hier. The problem posed is that of the relation between realistic representation and allegory, between the real and the imaginary, which takes three different forms in Voltaire's stories. In one type (Zadig, l'Ingénu) there is a synthesis of the two, in a second (Candide ) it is possible but not realised, while in the third (Berthier) they are radically separated. The two parts of the title (e.g. Candide ou l'optimisme ) are thus seen to be necessary, to be separate and not interchangeable ; they are an indication of the dialectical nature of the text.
