Yvon Belaval : Preliminary Was d'Alembert a philosopher ? This is only a first step towards an answer. His contemporaries were divided as to whether he was a snob or a sage. Although as a writer he aroused Voltaire's admiration, Diderot sent him contemptuously back to his equations. His ideal was the clear and distinct idea and he was close to this in literature ; surprisingly enough, according to mathematicians, he too often lacks this quality in his geometrical demonstrations. The philosopher has still to be judged.
