Raymonde Monnier : Reading among the people in the Paris départements. In an attempt to study how far the Revolution transformed the cultural habits of the ordinary people in Paris and its suburbs this paper studies the application of the Montagnard plan to regenerate the nation and create a new man. This meant a rational effort to educate and spread their principles. In the field of elementary education, the implementation of the Bouquier law improved still further an already privileged position as almost all the primary schools were created by the end of year II in this département. Catechisms and revolutionary almanachs spread republican morals and schoolteachers became the chief patriotic missionaries ; political events occupied an ever larger place in everyday life ; public readings took up a large part of popular societies' meetings. New revolutionary sociability led to an unprecedented explosion of reading habits.
