I shall be concerned here with studying the concept of the signature in easel-painting and in the cinema which represent two media where both the visible and the legible are present. Starting from this notion of "legi-visibility" I wish to examine the communicative implications of the signature by proposing the hypothesis that, on the one hand, the proper name does have semantic meaning and on the other that the act of signing raises theoretical questions of translation. The signature may be seen as signifying both disappearance, withdrawal and continuity -even timelessness -but it is not just the trace or the residue of the artist's name but rather part of the totality of his work and is thus to be seen as an exhibition or a translation of the proper name.

Ce travail propose une réflexion sur le concept de signature en peinture et au cinéma, deux espaces où se mêlent à l'occasion du visible et du lisible (graphique). A partir de cette notion de "livisibilité" il s'agit d'étudier l'enjeu signataire en faisant l'hypothèse , d'une part , que le nom propre a un contenu sémantique spécifique et, d'autre part, que l'acte signataire s'inscrit dans une problématique de la traduction. Une signature, qui signifie à la fois disparition, effacement et continuité, voire éternité, n'est pas seulement une trace, un reste du nom propre de l'artiste, c'est l'ensemble de l'oeuvre qui elle-même n'est rien d'autre qu'un déploiement, une traduction du nom propre.
