The Translation and Circulation of International Legal Terms in East Asia. The first complete translation of Wheaton's handbook on international law in Chinese leads the author to analyze the formation of the first modern legal glossary in Chinese characters (Wanguo gongfa HtH^^fe). As flawed as it was with shortcomings and ambiguities, this translation had a crucial role in the introduction of Western law in China, in Korea, in Japan. The second part is devoted to the impact of the new concepts and practices of international law on the relationships between these three countries that heretofore were part of a Sino-centered world. Japan finally took advantage of the legal glossary that it was able to select and improve from the first Chinese blue-prints.

Partant de la première traduction intégrale d'un manuel anglais de droit international en chinois, l'auteur analyse la formation du glossaire juridique en caractères chinois (Wanguo gongfa). Malgré ses imprécisions et ses équivoques, cette traduction a joué un rôle essentiel dans l'introduction du droit occidental en Chine, en Corée, au Japon. Dans une deuxième partie, l'auteur analyse l'impact des concepts et pratiques du droit international sur les relations entre ces trois pays de l'ancien « monde sinisé », et montre comment le Japon a tiré avantage du glossaire juridique qu'il avait su réaliser à partir des ébauches chinoises.
