The asking poem in Welsh literature The asking poem is a minor genre which is rarely attested before 1300, that is before the period of the Beirdd yr Uchelwyr. But during that period it becomes a necessary activity for the bards, who have no more great patrons. Its purpose is to gratify the recipient with a flattering description of the object the poet asks for, a frequently used technic being the metaphor (dy falu).
