L. Fleuriot était tenté d’analyser le toponyme Penhep (Finistère) comme un composé pen «tête» + *ep «cheval». Il y aurait un parallèle exact en irlandais, Cenn Eich (Hogan), cf. br. Penterc’h, gall. Pentyrch, et v.irl. Cenn Tuirc «tête de sanglier». Et d’autres noms bretons de même signification, Penmarc’h, Cap Cavai «tête de cheval». Mais Fleuriot avait insisté sur la nécessité, dans ce cas, de démontrer que le -h-n’était pas étymologique. Or cet h est en fait prononcé, [pen’hep], on doit donc considérer Penhep comme contenant, plutôt, pen (suivi de mutation spirante) + un k- initial, vraisemblablement kep, kap «colline».
