Notes of Gaulish etymology, XIII. About celicnon. The Gaulish word celicnon, found in two inscriptions (one on stone, Alesia ; and another on a cup, Banassac), has generally been translated on the basis of a comparison with got. kelikn which is used as a translation for gr. πύργος «tower», ou άναγαιον «one floor building». Fleuriot however suggested a secundary meaning, «recipient », in the second example. O. Szemerényi recently put forward the idea that Gaul, celicnon is a loan from Gr. kuvlix, diminutive κυλίχνη «cup». The author lists several arguments in favour of the meaning suggested by the comparison with the Gothic word.

Le mot gaulois celicnon, attesté dans deux inscriptions (inscription sur pierre, Alesia ; et inscription sur vase, Banassac), a généralement été traduit par comparaison avec l’emprunt gothique kelikn traduisant gr. πύργος «tour », ou άναγαιον «bâtiment à étage ». Fleuriot cependant supposait un sens de récipient dans le second exemple. O. Szemerényi a récemment suggéré de faire du mot gaulois un emprunt au gr. κύλιξ, diminutif κυλίχνη «coupe ». L’auteur présente un certain nombre d’arguments en faveur du sens indiqué par le rapprochement gotique.
