Metamorphosis of Eoin Bruinne : Constructing John the Apostle in Medieval Ireland

This paper investigates the figure of Saint John the Apostle as it appears in Hiberno-Latin and Irish medieval literature, in miscellaneous documents ranging from the seventh century to the early modern period. In doing so, John’s distinctive traits have been identified – close intimacy with Christ, religious virginity, exclusive access to arcane wisdom – and analyzed, and certain Irish peculiarities have been highlighted – his epithet Eóin Bruinne (‘John of the Breast’), and his literary transformation into an infant. John is then characterized as a symbol of mystical intimacy and spiritual friendship, and possibly as an authoritative model for religious fosterage.

La métamorphose d’Eoin Bruinne : la construction de la figure de saint Jean l’Apôtre dans l’Irlande médiévale. Cet article s’intéresse à la figure de saint Jean l’Apôtre telle qu’elle est représentée dans la littérature irlandaise médiévale, en latin et en langue vernaculaire, dans un corpus de textes variés allant du septième siècle jusqu’au début de l’époque moderne. Leur étude nous a permis d’identifier et d’analyser les traits distinctifs de saint Jean – sa proche intimité avec le Christ, sa virginité religieuse ainsi que son accès exclusif à un savoir ésotérique ; il nous a en outre été possible de mettre en lumière certaines spécificités irlandaises, notamment l’épithète Eóin Bruinne («Jean de la Poitrine») qui lui est attribuée et sa transformation littéraire en un petit enfant. Saint Jean apparaît enfin comme un symbole d’intimité mystique et d’amitié spirituelle, et peut-être aussi comme un modèle qui fait autorité en ce qui concerne le fosterage (placement pour éducation) religieux.
