The article examines the relation between economic statistics and economic policy, using developments in statistical and economic decision theory over the last ten years. Only a very small percentage of improvement in economic stability or growth, it is argued, is enough to make almost any conceivable data collection worthwhile. No country is adequate in respect of its data, and underdeveloped countries in particular need to consider whether the marginal productivity or investment in belter economic statistics is not higher for them than almost any conceivable alternative ; they have more need and less data than other countries,
