Methodology and Orthodox Monetary Policy

The paper analyses the ascendancy of the New Orthodoxy by means of a behavioural theory of scientific activity, exploring the way in which economists choose their school throught. Central to this choice, and to the character of each school of thought, is the methodology employed. The range of policy prescriptions considered by each school is, in turn, constrained by the chosen methodology. The recent experience of UK monetary policy is considered as a case study.

Cet article explique la domination qu’exerce sur les économistes la nouvelle orthodoxie par une théorie behavioriste de l’activité scientifique qui rend compte du processus de choix d’une école de pensée. Le principe de ce choix est la méthodologie employée qui caractérise chacune de ces écoles de pensée. La méthodologie choisie détermine encore l’ensemble des mesures de politique économique retenues par chaque école. L’expérience récente de la politique monétaire anglaise est prise comme exemple.
