Peut-on suivre de mauvaises conventions ? Coordination et Pareto-optimalité

While being based on a critical survey of the ‘strategic’ and ‘evolutionary’ approaches of convention in games theory, the article deals with the possible non-optimality of the convention, which implies a coordination failure. Actually, to follow a sub-optimal, but risk-dominant, convention can be individually rational in static and evolutionary more stable in dynamics. This paper underlines the incapacity from the game theory to capture the potential inefftcacity of conventional rules.

En s’appuyant sur une revue critique des approches stratégique et évolutionniste des conventions en théorie des jeux, l’article s’interroge sur leur possible sous-optimalité, ce qui implique un défaut de coordination. Le suivi d’une convention sous-optimale, ou mauvaise convention, peut être individuellement rationnel en statique et évolutionnairement plus stable en dynamique, si elle a la propriété d’être risque-dominante. L’article souligne les difficultés, pour la théorie des jeux, de se saisir de V éventuelle inefficacité des règles conventionnelles.
