Les centres financiers internationaux (CFI) ont suscité un intérêt croissant ces dernières années. Cependant, il s’agit le plus souvent de comparer les coûts et avantages respectifs des différents centres. Nous proposons ici une réflexion théorique sur la géographie des activités financières internationales et le rôle des CFI. Nous présentons plusieurs résultats théoriques issus des modèles de concurrence entre marchés et d’économie spatiale, que nous confrontons avec les évolutions récentes de l’environnement financier international. Deux tendances sont soulignées : d’une part, l’affaiblissement des barrières à la concentration des marchés financiers et les pressions à la concentration géographique des activités financières dans les plus grands centres, et, d’autre part, une organisation géographique des activités qui cherche à tirer parti des avantages spécifiques des localisations.
