Les ethnologues et les historiens des religions opposent d’ordinaire chamanisme et culte de l’ours. Dans cet article, l’auteur montre que la mythologie et les rituels liés à l’ours d’une part, et le chamanisme d’autre part, sont au contraire des phénomènes complémentaires qui, pris dans leur ensemble, parviennent à former un système de représentations de l’univers. Les signes représentant l’ours sur le costume et les instruments du chamane n’y sont pas que la manifestation d'un simple esprit auxiliaire zoomorphe. Leur fonction est beaucoup plus profonde puisque, dans bien des cas en effet, le chamane n’est autre que la personnification de l’ours qui, pour de nombreux peuples sibériens, passe pour être à la fois créateur du cosmos et de la société, ancêtre primordial et héros culturel.
