The non-verbal communication between children ranging from 4 to 7 1/2 months old was observed in a situation such that, children of the same age faced one another. The precocity of the first mimic exchanges is highlighted. Four mimic groups are distinguished: the face-attention conduct, smiles, motor activation and the attention distraction behaviour. The lack of communication sequences beginning with a behavioural unit other than staring at the face was noted as well as that of agressive conduct before the age of 7 1/2 months.

La communication non-verbale entre enfants âgés de 4 à 7 1/2 mois a été observée dans une situation de vis-à-vis entre enfants du même âge. La précocité des premiers échanges mimiques est mise en évidence. Quatre groupes mimiques sont distingués: le comportement d'attention au visage, les sourires,l'activation motrice, les conduites de détour d'attention. L'absence de séquence de communication débutant par une unité comportementale autre que la fixation du regard sur le visage a été observée ainsi que l'absence de conduites agressives avant l'âge de 7 1/2.
