The article looks at the extent to which the Baghdad School, a key translation centre in the 9th century AD/2nd century of the Hijra which is often associated with the Bayt al-Hikma or House of Wisdom of the Abbasid Caliphs, takes on a highly symbolic value in the history and the imaginary of the Arab tradition of translation, as well as in the construction of a universal discourse on translation. The discussion will focus on two aspects of the School : The role it played in the transmission and production of knowledge, and the way it contributes to the construction of a given tradition and of a discourse on translation.

Cet article se propose d’examiner dans quelle mesure l’École de Bagdad, véritable foyer de traductions au IXe siècle avant J. C/ IIe siècle de l’hégire, et entreprise souvent associée à la Bayt al-Hikma ou Maison de la Sagesse des Califes abbassides, fait l’objet d’une représentation hautement symbolique dans une histoire et un imaginaire de la tradition arabe de la traduction et dans la construction d’un récit universel sur la traduction. Cette interrogation s’articulera en fonction de deux aspects, le rôle de cette école dans la transmission et la production du savoir, ainsi que le modèle mythique qu’elle représente dans la construction d’une tradition et d’un discours sur la traduction.
