This study offers an analysis of the song Göttingen, written and performed by Barbara. First, some extracts from the singer’s memoirs (Barbara 1998) will be introduced in order to indicate how the biographical fragments can contribute to a broader consideration of the song while also shedding light on its genesis. While it is amusing for the audience to place these anecdotes within the context of the muchloved singer’s life, they also help to reveal the artistry of her writing. Secondly, it should not be forgotten that the translation of the song itself can be determined by personal information as well as by external circumstances that the translator might wish to render explicit. In this way, the context in which the Italian version of the song was produced (by the author herself) will be discussed, situating this study within the field of translation genetics. Thirdly, the Italian, German and Swedish translations of Göttingen will be compared, together with a recent translation into Yiddish, which emerged out of this study.

La présente étude concerne la chanson Göttingen, écrite et interprétée par Barbara. Premièrement, nous nous focalisons sur des extraits des mémoires de cette chanteuse française (Barbara 1998), pour montrer comment les fragments biographiques sont significatifs dans l’étude globale ainsi que dans la genèse de la chanson. En effet, ces anecdotes, que le public aime situer dans la vie de son chanteur préféré, jouent le rôle d’un révélateur de l’écriture d’un artiste. Deuxièmement, nous rappelons que même la traduction de la chanson peut être déterminée par des faits personnels ainsi que par des circonstances extérieures que le traducteur souhaite expliciter. Ainsi, nous évoquons le contexte d’origine de notre version italienne de cette chanson. Cela situe cette étude dans la génétique des traductions. Troisièmement, dans l’optique de la comparaison des traductions, nous prenons en considération les traductions de la chanson Göttingen en italien, en allemand et en suédois et nous faisons aussi référence à une traduction récente en yiddish issue du cadre de notre étude.
