Demogeography and Statistical Data. In France, access to data produced through public agencies underwent deep changes over the last few years. We briefly drawn the legal framework (law Computing and liberty ; law on the statistical secret) and the institutions whose functions are data production and diffusion (INSEE), control and regulation (CNIL, CNIG and CNIS), debate (SFdS). Researchers in economics and social sciences took an active part to the remodeling of this legal framework, resulting in the creation of the Quételet center ; the LASMAS, a CNRS financed research center and the Quételet center are both devoted to data diffusion. The INSEE and the CNIL are asking for a better cooperation and coordination among geographers.

En France, les conditions d'accès des chercheurs à la statistique publique évoluent beaucoup. Le cadre législatif est utile à connaître (Loi de 1951, Loi IL), comme le sont les institutions ayant des fonctions de production et de diffusion (INSEE), de contrôle et de régulation (CNIL, CNIG et CNIS), de réflexion et de proposition (SFdS). Plusieurs actions ont été récemment entreprises par les chercheurs en sciences économiques et sociales, pour contribuer au renouvellement de ce cadre législatif (loi Informatique et Liberté). Deux structures, le LASMAS et le centre Quételet, récemment créé, offrent d'importantes ressources aux chercheurs en matière de données et de fonds de cartes. Une meilleure coordination des géographes, souhaitée par l'INSEE et la CNIL, devrait permettre de mieux nous informer et nous défendre.
