Mortality from alcoholism according to generations. A study has been made of the mortality attributed, first, directly to alcoholism, and, secondly, to cirrhosis of the liver (a disease which is most frequently of alcoholic origin), by observing the time series of mortality rates (by sex and age), according to years of birth (by five-yearly groups of generations from 1860-1864 to 1930-1934). In this way it has been possible to compile mortality tables and to plot curves which bring out, first, the growth trend in successive generations of the risk connected with this cause of mortality, and, secondly, the sensitivity of this mortality to fluctuations in the consumption of alcoholic beverages. Thus, the restrictions imposed during the last World War are very clearly reflected in a fall in the curves of mortality from alcoholism and cirrhosis. It also appears that the youngest generations are less exposed to this risk.

En raison de l'intérêt que l'on accorde à l'appréciation de l'incidence de l'alcoolisme sur la mortalité, il était opportun de compléter l'observation annuelle de cette mortalité par une étude par génération, de façon à mettre en évidence le comportement de ces générations au regard de cette cause de décès. Dans la présente note on a rassemblé des éléments statistiques qui contribuent à éclairer ces situations.
