On the power to clear away clouds. Comments on the political theory of Thomas A. Metzger. This article constitutes a critical examination of Thomas A. Metzger’s attempt to radically rethink political theory in his book A Cloud Across the Pacific : Essays on the Clash Between Chinese and Western Political Theories Today. It analyzes the methodology that Metzger advocates in order to create the conditions of a “ global conversation” that would overcome the aporiae of different cultural traditions. At the same time, it emphasizes three closely linked themes which seem particularly fruitful for reflecting on “ the political” beyond its institutional dimensions : the issues of epistemology, elitism, and paideia or the education of children.

Cet article constitue un examen critique de l’entreprise de refondation de la théorie politique conduite par Thomas A. Metzger dans son ouvrage A Cloud Across the Pacific : Essays on the Clash between Chinese and Western Political Theories Today. Nous nous intéressons à la méthodologie qu’il propose pour créer les conditions d’une conversation globale (global conversation), dépassant les apories d’univers culturels spécifiques. Parallèlement, nous mettons l’accent sur trois thèmes, intimement liés, qui nous semblent particulièrement riches pour réfléchir au politique au-delà de ses dimensions institutionnelles : l’épistémologie, l’élitisme et la paideia (l’éducation des enfants).
