Zhuangzi and the inferno of politics. In a brief and little-studied dialog from Chapter XXIV of Zhuangzi, an ascetic by the name of Nanbo Ziqi tells his disciple he has had a terrible nightmare : he has been driven out of his retreat by the prince of Qi to receive an official position. Starting from the analysis of this sketch and the comparison with the famous opening of Chapter II, where the same two characters appear, the present article proposes to demonstrate that Zhuangzi is in no way campaigning for disengagement from politics. Not content to conduct a virulent critique of absolutist regimes, he condemns the detrimental effects of any form of hierarchical organisation of society. This critique of politics as a harbinger of enslavement and domination is a necessary step in a philosophical system which seeks to call into question the categories of understanding of which language is both a vehicle and a product. Thus the condemnation of even the category of politics is one of the fundamental dimensions of Zhuangzi’s thought and cannot been dissociated from questions of epistemology and ontology.
