Zhang Chao : An Overview of Biji or the Miscellanea of Chan Buddhism. In the vast literature of Chinese Buddhism, the miscellanea of the Chan school (Chanlin biji 禪 林 筆 記) have been neglected in modern research until now because of their limited quantity and their marginal nature. Compiled by the clergy between the 12th and 14th centuries, these collections of brief notes record a profusion of stories, compositions in verse and doctrinal references of the Chan school of the same period and constitute an important supplement to the official historiography of the school. In China as in Japan, this literary tradition, which is characterized in addition by its vivid and attractive style, has enjoyed a great popularity over the centuries. An exploration of these documents allows us to renew our knowledge of the history, the doctrines, the institutions and the social influence of this current of Buddhism in pre-modern China. The present article seeks to provide results derived from preliminary studies of Chan miscellanea and attempts to formulate a preliminary definition of the genre through the examination of it is fundamental texts — the Seven Books (Qibu shu 七 部 書).

Dans la vaste littérature du bouddhisme chinois, les miscellanées de l’école du Chan (chanlin biji 禪 林 筆 記) sont restées jusqu’ici négligées par la recherche moderne en raison de leur quantité restreinte et de leur caractère marginal. Compilés par le clergé entre le XIIe et le XIVe siècle, ces recueils de notes brèves consignent une profusion d’anecdotes, de compositions versifiées et de références doctrinales de l’école du Chan à une même période et constituent un complément majeur de l’historiographie officielle de l’école. En Chine comme au Japon, cette tradition littéraire, caractérisée par ailleurs par son style vivant et savoureux, jouit d’une grande popularité à travers les siècles. L’exploration de cette documentation permettra de rénover nos connaissances sur l’histoire, la doctrine, l’institution et l’influence sociale de ce courant bouddhique à l’époque de la Chine pré-moderne. Le présent article fournit quelques résultats issus des études préliminaires des miscellanées du Chan et tente de formuler une première définition du genre à travers l’examen de ses textes fondamentaux – les Sept livres (Qibu shu 七 部 書).

張 超 (Zhang Chao) : 禪 宗 筆 記 文 學 蠡 測 中 國 佛 教 典 籍 浩 瀚 ， 其 中 的 「 禪 林 筆 記 」 文 類 由 於 文 本 數 量 較 少 且 地 位 邊 緣 ， 始 終 沒 有 得 到 現 代 學 界 的 足 夠 重 視 。 這 些 由 短 小 隨 筆 積 漸 而 成 的 文 集 出 自 十 二 至 十 四 世 紀 的 禪 僧 之 手 ， 含 括 大 量 同 時 代 的 宗 門 軼 事 、 詩 偈 韻 文 及 公 案 典 故 。 這 些 一 手 資 料 是 禪 宗 正 史 書 寫 的 重 要 補 充 ， 使 我 們 對 這 一 佛 教 宗 派 在 前 現 代 中 國 的 歷 史 、 教 義 、 僧 團 組 織 及 社 會 影 響 有 了 更 為 確 切 的 認 識 。 本 文 介 紹 了 若 干 禪 林 筆 記 研 究 的 先 期 成 果 ： 在 對 其 核 心 文 本 —— 「 七 部 書 」 —— 的 一 系 列 考 察 之 後 ， 我 們 試 圖 給 出 該 文 類 的 初 步 定 義 。
