Preliminary report on the Hamburg Archaeological Mission to Axum 2000

: Unearthing of remains versus problem orientated complex, "Holistic Archaeology", the field work starting from a set of historic questions on environmental change, settlement and depopulation of the area and cultural behaviour are the base of recent archaeological investigations. After an intensive survey, the sites of Mai Malahso with the 3-language stele of King Ezana and of Berit Audi were chosen for excavations. In the first site, a bigger building complex was investigated; in the latter, a sequence was pointed out: a first palace/a king's grave, a second palace/an annex to the big grave, a ritual filling with stones and soils of the buildings of prechristian phase; the king's grave overlain by a monastery with a baptisterium, and by a Christian cemetery. Besides these topics, some technical processes have been investigated by excavations and experiments. The sequence covers the phase of latest prechristian to early Christian times.

: Confronter les trouvailles et les problématiques, pratiquer une "archéologie holistique", travailler sur le terrain à partir de questions sur l'histoire des changements environnementaux, de l'installation humaine et du dépeuplement d'une zone, ou encore des comportements culturels; telles sont les lignes directrices de ces récentes recherches archéologiques. Après une prospection intensive, les sites de Mai Malahso et de Berit Audi ont été retenus. Sur le premier site, un ensemble bâti a été fouillé; sur le second, la séquence suivante a été mise en évidence: un premier palais/tombe royale, un second palais/annexe de la tombe, un remplissage rituel des bâtiments préchrétiens avec des pierres et de la terre. À la tombe royale succède un monastère avec baptistère, puis un cimetière chrétien. Par ailleurs, certains procédés techniques ont été étudiés, à la fouille ou expérimentalement. La séquence chronologique de cette étude va de la fin de la période préchrétienne au début de la période chrétienne.
