Emmanuel Sulzer, Vocational selection strategies in a changing training supply context The case of short further training schemes in fine art and the applied arts. Traditionally, the teaching of fine art and the applied arts in France has always depended on the Ministry of Culture. During the eighties, however, the training supply developed considerably in these fields, and a wider range of institutional actors came to be involved. The teaching of art has therefore developed into a complex system in which the various streams can sometimes be both complementary and mutually competitive. Artists are now being trained not only at the specialized art schools, but also in the framework of the « standard » French national educational system. Given the present training supply, the choice of pathway can be said to be a matter of personal choice, depending on the individual's socially constructed picture of the educational system and its goals. The choice of short further educational courses in art among the whole range available tends to be made by individuals from the social groups which are the least well endowed with cultural capital. These subjects turned out to be readier than the others to adapt their educational paths to the vocational goals which they always have to keep in sight.
