Beyond the stereotypes of gender : two examples in Switzerland. Successfully reconverted female ambulance workers and male child educators have overcome the gender stereotypes attaching to these professions and enjoy their jobs although they are usually held by members of the opposite sex. However, they still have to put up with the attitudes prevalent among the users of their services as well as in their immediate occupational circles. Everything runs fairly smoothly during their day- to-day activities. But when crises occur, both men and women fall back on the stereotypes which were part of the early socialising processes. This means that it might be useful to teach people how to recognize these stereotypes when they emerge and how to skillfully circumvent them. Key words Ambulance driver, occupational paths, gender based division of labour, teachers of young children, re-integration into the labour market, perception of work.
