In the imperial age Homer still had a central role in Greek paideia : Second Sophistic authors (Lucian, Dio Chrysostom, Philostratus) often show a critical attitude towards traditional methods of Homeric interpretation, as they were practiced in schools. In this paper some instances of such an attitude, especially in Dio Chrysostom, will be discussed.
