Les objets chez Sophocle sont nombreux et remplissent plusieurs fonctions, parmi lesquelles d’une part celle d’être mortifères et d’autre part celle de renvoyer à des valeurs significatives pour leur propriétaire, dans le cadre du contexte mobilisé par l’intrigue (contexte guerrier, rituel ou funéraire, par exemple). En deçà de ces fonctions, la manière dont les objets sont donnés (légués, transmis, offerts) joue un rôle prépondérant. Dans l’Ajax, au don de l’épée qui scelle la mort du héros répond le don préalable du bouclier au fils, comme transmission des valeurs héroïques du père. Dans les Trachiniennes, le don du péplos, dans le contexte du sacrifice et du monde sauvage, répond, sur le mode de l’échange, au don d’Iole à Déjanire, puis à Hyllos, comme «objet » signifiant le rôle d’Eros pour Héraclès, dans le contexte du mariage. Dans l’Électre, le don de l’urne factice permet le dévoilement de l’identité d’Oreste à sa soeur et constitue le point culminant de la mise en abîme de la fi ction tragique ; les offrandes de Clytemnestre mettent en évidence l’opposition entre langage verbal et signes non verbaux. Dans le Philoctète, l’acte de rendre l’arc au héros coupe court à la logique de la ruse mise en place par Ulysse et fait écho au don antérieur par son propriétaire initial, Héraclès. Ces transactions liées aux objets, lorsqu’elles sont d’ordre mortifère, sont le plus souvent liées à une ruse ou une «machination » (μηχανή) et d’autre part caractérisées par une réciprocité (χάρις) bancale ou factice. Dans ce contexte, les objets peuvent apparaître comme des agents et expriment des intentions qui dépassent celles des protagonistes qui les manipulent.
