This close reading of Iliad, I, 1-2 draws on the scholarly approaches to Homeric poetry of Hermann Fränkel, Milman Parry, and Joannes Kakridis. It shows in detail how Homer exploits norms of language, meter, style, and myth in a distinctive way at the beginning of the epic, both fulfilling and disappointing the expectations of audiences and readers and calling attention to the poem’s central theme of mortal heroism and to Achilles as the mortal hero par excellence.

Interprétation du chant I de l’Iliade : langue, mètre, style et mythe. L’article propose une lecture détaillée des deux premiers vers de l’Iliade, qui fait appel aux approches savantes développées par Hermann Fränkel, Milman Parry et Joannes Kakridis sur la poésie homérique. Elle montre en détail comment Homère utilise les normes linguistiques, métriques, stylistiques et le mythe d’une manière distinctive au début de l’épopée, remplissant et décevant à la fois les attentes de ses publics et de ses lecteurs et attirant l’attention sur le thème central du poème, qui est l’héroïsme mortel et à Achille, le héros mortel par excellence.
