Hermes the Craftsman: The Invention of the Lyre

What practical and intellectual abilities are required to build a textual object ? How can the craftsman’s agency be manifested in the construction of the object itself ? This paper considers the invention of the lyre in the Homeric hymn to Hermes (Homeric Hymns, IV, 25– 61) as one of the earliest and most intriguing exemplifications of an epic mode of object-construction, carried out through both description and narrative. The episode offers a vivid image of the god’s téchnè by prompting the audience to ‘ construct’ the object in front of their eyes as Hermes builds it for the first time. This paper shows that the Hermes hymn, and especially the god’s creation of an eminently poetic object, may be read as a subtle reflection on the nature of craft. In the process of metamorphosis necessary to the construction of the lyre, the divine technician combines features of the living creature with the new ‘ musical’ status assumed by the dead tortoise. Hermes, the god of crossroads and commercial exchange, has the power of creating the harmony of opposites, of making word and deed coincide, of turning potentiality into action.

Hermès, dieu artisan : l’invention de la lyre. À quels savoirs faut-il recourir pour bâtir un objet textuel ? Comment se peut-il que la construction d’un objet révèle la nature de la maîtrise pratique et théorique de l’artisan ? Mon analyse de l’invention de la lyre dans l’hymne homérique à Hermès (Hymnes homériques, V, 25-61) porte sur ces questions. Dans le texte de l’hymne, la construction de l’instrument explore la notion de téchnè au moyen d’une figuration nette et détaillée des procédés de fabrication de la lyre. La mort, métamorphose, et renaissance de la tortue invitent à réfléchir sur la puissance inventive d’Hermès, qui rend possible l’enchantement et l’ensorcellement provoqués par le son de la lyre. Ma contribution se propose donc de préciser les enjeux conceptuels et interprétatifs du rôle du dieu en tant qu’artisan de la création musicale et poétique. En transformant le cadavre de la tortue en instrument donneur d’immortalité, le dieu du commerce et des échanges exerce en même temps le pouvoir d’harmoniser les contraires et, par conséquent, celui d’unifier théorie et pratique, potentialité et résultat, pensée et action.
