Évolution urbaine à Saint-Romain-en-Gal : la rue du Commerce et la maison aux Cinq Mosaïques : Présentation

At the beginning of the 1st C. A.D., the creation of the Trade street shows the expansion of the extra-muros district of Saint-Romain-en-Gal. The development of this area began during the augustan period near the River Rhône, slightly above the antique centre of Vienne (Isère), on an alluvial plain already surveyed. Towards the middle of the 1st C., the street is equipped with a public main sewer, construction which is in close connection with the development of the west side of the road. In particular, we note the emergence of the maison au Grand Péristyle. This residence possesses a building devoted to trade that will constitute the frame of the maisons au Bassin Excentré, created in the middle of the 2nd C., and aux Cinq Mosaïques that suceeds it at the end of the same century. At this time, the Trade street's roadway is paved with big granite block and bordered, on the west side, with a stone-built pavement. No new transformations happen before the disuse of this district in the course of the 3rd C.

Au début du Ier s. après J.-C., la création de la rue du Commerce traduit l'expansion du quartier extra-muros de Saint-Romain-en-Gal. Celui-ci s'est développé durant l'époque augustéenne à proximité du Rhône, légèrement en amont du centre antique de Vienne (Isère), sur une plaine alluviale préalablement cadastrée. Vers le milieu du Ier s., la rue est dotée d'un collecteur public dont la construction s'avère être en étroite relation avec l'aménagement de l'îlot qui borde la voie à l'ouest. Nous observons notamment l'apparition de la maison au Grand Péristyle. Cette demeure possède un bâtiment à vocation commerciale qui constituera l'ossature de la maison au Bassin Excentré, créée au milieu du IIe s., et de celle aux Cinq Mosaïques qui lui succède à la fin du siècle. A cette époque, la chaussée de la rue du Commerce est pavée avec de gros blocs de granite et est bordée par un trottoir maçonné sur le côté ouest. Aucun nouvel aménagement ne survient avant l'abandon du quartier qui se produit dans le courant du IIIe s.
