An Account of Political Archives in France -From the Personal to the Functional Approach. After decades of retaining their archives in their own hands, political figures at the highest level have changed tack and, since the 1980s, have agreed to deposit them in the National Archives at the end of their term of office. The French political landscape is characterised by the power of the official teams of ministerial advisers and the concentration of decision -making at this level. The interest of their archives justifies, therefore, the establishment of a specific strategy, which can take into account, from the point of creation, this collective dimension of the activities of the head of state and members of the government. The authors give an account of the stages of this process, carried out and defined jointly between the Secretariat general du Gouvernement and by the archivists working within the central departments of state, by which these archives are obtained as rapidly as possible and their dispersal avoided. There has thus been a shift from a personal approach to government fonds to a functional one, and one which allows for their safekeeping at the point of creation.

Après des décennies d'appropriation privée de leurs archives, les plus hautes autorités politiques françaises ont changé de comportement et accepté, depuis les années 1980, de les remettre aux Archives nationales à la fin de leurs fonctions. Le paysage politique français est caractérisé par le poids des cabinets ministériels et la centralisation des décisions au niveau de ces structures. L'intérêt de leurs archives justifiait donc la mise e n œuvre, dès leur création, d'une stratégie spécifique, propre à rendre compte de la dimension collective des activités du chef de l'Etat et des membres du gouvernement. Les auteurs rappellent les étapes de la politique menée et définie, conjointement avec le Secrétariat général du Gouvernement, par les archivistes en mission dans les administrations centrales de l'Etat, pour obtenir ces fonds d'archives le plus rapidement possible et éviter leur dispersion. On est ainsi passé d'une approche personnelle à une approche fonctionnelle des fonds gouvernementaux qui permet d'en assurer leur sauvegarde dès le lieu de production. Ces deux approches s'exercent successivement dans le temps et sont parfaitement complémentaires.
