The Inaccessible Battlefield In December, 1918, a cameraman filmed the combat zone from the North Sea to Champagne from a dirigible. This ment makes it possible to see a fossil country - that of World War I - which has disappeared today, covered over by vegetation and reconstruction. As symbols of the war coming from the sky, dirigibles made a strong impression on the population, in spite of their vulnerability. They at least had the advantage of offering an interesting view of the battlefield, a radical viewpoint: wherever the war had passed, there was nothing identifiable left, and above all, not a trace of the millions of men who had fought there.

Ce document permet de voir un paysage fossile, celui de la Première Guerre mondiale, aujourd'hui disparu, recouvert par la végétation et la reconstruction. Symboles de la guerre venue du ciel, les dirigeables impressionnaient tement les populations, et ce, malgré leur vulnérabilité. Ils avaient au moins le mérite d'offrir un point de vue intéressant sur le champ de bataille, un point de vue radical : là où la guerre avait passé, il n'y avait plus rien d'identifiable et surtout plus aucune trace des millions d'hommes qui étaient battus.
