Medically-assisted reproduction first and now the perspective of human cloning have provoked much discussion on the very essence of humanity, which they seem to attack, indeed to threaten with a fatal blow. However these are still minority and, in the case of cloning, hypothetical practices. But what is important here is not so much the concrete reality of the facts as the image of them and what is feared is above all the attack on the idea that humanity has of itself and its identity as a gendered, genealogical and mortal species. Without taking a position on the well-founded nature of these fears, the goal is to establish a schematic cartography of them and to analyse what, in the gender difference and the time used, is felt both to be fundamental to « the essence of humanity » and what is fundamentally weakened by the intervention of bio-medecine in reproduction.

La procréation médicalement assistée, puis la perspective d’application humaine du clonage reproductif, ont suscité de nombreuses inquiétudes quant à l’essence même de l’humanité, à laquelle elles semblent porter atteinte, voire qu’elles menacent d’un coup fatal ; ces pratiques restent pourtant minoritaires, et dans le cas du clonage, encore hypothétique. Mais l’important ici n’est pas tant la réalité concrète des faits que les représentations mises en œuvre, et ce qui est craint est surtout l’atteinte à l’idée que l’humanité se fait d’elle-même et de son identité, comme espèce sexuée, généalogique, et mortelle. Sans prendre parti sur le bien-fondé de ces appréhensions, on tâche d’en établir la cartographie schématique, et d’analyser ce qui, dans la différence des sexes et dans le temps vectorisé, est ressenti à la fois comme fondamental eu égard au « propre de l’homme », et fondamentalement fragilisé par l’irruption de la biomédecine dans la procréation.
