Une bonne connaissance du fonctionnement des écosystèmes d'eau courante nécessitela prise en considération d'un certain nombre de variables physiques supposés les régir. Le CEMAGREF de Lyon développe actuellement une méthodologie permettant de décrire et modéliser trois de ces variables jouant un rôle essentiel pour la communauté biotique : la vitesse du courant, la hauteur d'eau et la granulométrie du lit. Un découpage de la station en cellules discrètes permet d'obtenir une image claire de la variabilité spatiale des conditions hydrodynamiques observées, un modèle mathématique de calcul de ligne d'eau autorisant l'appréciation de leur variabilité temporelle. L'exemple d'une station étudiée sur un cours d'eau de montagne donne une bonne idée des résultats ainsi obtenus.
