Explanation is given of a coherent method to ensure the integrated management of river ecosystems. The overall aim is to define long term management rules which reconcile the continuing functioning of ecosystems and different uses of the water. The conceptual framework is based on a typological approach relating to factors of ecological dynamics and of the degree of anthropisation of rivers. The method consists of four stages : 1) typological synthesis ; 2) definition and hierarchical ordering of management constraints ; 3) Proposal of scenarios ; 4) choice of options and means. Some general orientations are suggested. The approach implies the creation in each basin of a scientific group capable of understanding the dynamics of the ecosystems.

Une démarche cohérente en vue d'une gestion intégrée des écosystèmes d'eaux courantes est explicitée. L'objectif global est la définition de règles de gestion à long terme conciliant le maintien du fonctionnement des écosystèmes et les usages de l'eau. Le cadre conceptuel repose sur une approche typologique basée sur les facteurs du fonctionnement écologique et le degré d'anthropisation des cours d'eau. La démarche s'articule en quatre phases : 1) synthèses typologiques ; 2) définition et hiérarchisation des contraintes de gestion ; 3) proposition de scénarios; 4) choix des orientations et des moyens. Des orientations générales sont suggérées. La démarche suppose la création au niveau de chaque bassin de cellules scientifiques capables d'appréhender le fonctionnement des écosystèmes.
