The human and social sciences discuss the issue of public space at great length. But is such space really seen as a concrete and material object ? In the name of developing democratic exchanges, many philosophers, in debating opinions, eliminate physical space in favour of abstract space. Sociologists adopt a similar form of abstraction. Others are caught up in métaphores. Some economists imitate them. Urban actors with a functionalist perspec- tive transform concrete space into merely a neutral support for other uses. As for geographers, even if they are attached to the notion of space, it is generally studied at a broad scale using maps rather than detailed plans. However, architects know that the technique of the urban plan is efficient for analysing physical space. Might it not be appropriate, therefore, for the human sciences, to adopt this intelligent architect's tool to represent space ?

Les sciences humaines et sociales parlent abondamment des espaces publics. Mais voient-elles réellement l'espace concret, matériel, dans ces espaces publics ? Au nom du développement des échanges démocratiques, bien des philosophes évacuent l'espace physique au profit d'un "espace" abstrait du débat d'opinion. Des sociologues les accompagnent dans cette abstraction. D'autres se prennent au piège des métaphores. Des économistes les imitent. Les acteurs urbains proches du fonctionnalisme font disparaître l'espace concret sous les usages dont il ne serait que le support neutre. Quant aux géographes, même s'ils s'attachent à l'espace, ils en restent généralement à la carte et n'envisagent que rarement le plan. Or les architectes savent que la technique du plan est efficace pour analyser les espaces physiques. Les sciences humaines ne seraient-elles pas bien inspirées d'emprunter aux architectes cet outil de représentation et d'intelligence de l'espace réel ?
