In the Greater Lyon region, forty years of urban sprawl have not led to the decline, disappearance or weakening of the surrounding secondary urban centres. These small, peripheral towns have not lost their identity as they have been absorbed by the outward growth of the neighbouring metropolis. They still stand out in the landscape and in the minds of the population. Certain of their traditional functions have even been reinforced. Périurbanisation and the creation of new peripheral industrial and commercial poles have accompanied the strengthening of these towns as centres for the provision of household services. Thus, against expectations, these secondary centres have reinforced their role as central places, polarising to a lesser or greater extent the surrounding space.

Sur la région lyonnaise, quarante ans d'étalement urbain n'ont pas induit le dépérissement, l'effacement ou encore l'étiolement des centres secondaires. Ces petites agglomérations périphériques, qui ont été rejointes, puis englobées dans la nappe périurbaine lyonnaise n'ont pas été dissoutes par l'étalement de leur métropole voisine. Elles se distinguent toujours dans les paysages et marquent encore largement les esprits. Elles ont même renforcé certaines de leurs fonctions traditionnelles. La périurbanisation et l'émergence de nouvelles polarités périphériques, productives et commerciales, ont, en effet, été de paire avec un renforcement fonctionnel de ces centres secondaires en matière de services aux ménages. Ces bourgs, ces petites villes se voient ainsi et contre toute attente confortés en tant que places centrales polarisant un espace plus ou moins étendu, plus ou moins exclusif.
