Les faluns pliocènes du bassin du Gharb (Maroc-occidental)

During early and middle Pliocene, the plain of Gharb filled up with thick faluns. Their sedimental and biological characteristics (Ostracoda and Mollusca) have been looked out in the two main drillings. This bioclastic formation, with marine nature at the bottom becomes more or less brackish at the top, announcing the Villafranchian fluvio-estuarine sedimentation of the last filling-up phasis in South-Rif furrow. These faluns correspond to a transitional period in the dynamic evolution of the basin, bound to both climatic and structural events.

Au cours du Pliocène moyen, s'est accumulé dans la plaine du Gharb un important dépôt de faluns dont les caractéristiques sédimentologiques et biologiques (Ostracodes et Mollusques) ont été examinées dans les deux principaux forages. Cette formation bioclastique à caractère marin franc à la base, devient plus ou moins saumâtre au sommet, préfigurant la sédimentation fluvio-estuarienne du Villafranchien qui marque l'ultime phase de comblement du sillon. Ces faluns correspondent à une période transitoire dans l'évolution dynamique du bassin, liée à la conjugaison d'événements climatiques et structuraux.
