Tentative de comparaison entre la limite supérieure du Campanien stratotypique et la limite inférieure du Maastrichtien stratotypique

The Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary is compared in two areas located in different palaeogeographic realms : the Charentes for the type Campanian (tethyan realm) and the Limburg for the type Maastrichtian (boreal realm). As a preliminary, the boundary adopted considers a Maastrichtian stage beginning with the first appearance of Belemnella lanceolata. The vertical distribution of selected species of macro-and microfossils near the boundary is discussed for the two areas. It becomes evident that appearances and extinctions of benthic as planktonic microfossils are affected by diachronism, phenomenon which is to take into account for correlation of sections belonging to distinct palaeogeographic provinces.

On compare la limite Campanien-Maastrichtien dans deux régions appartenant à des domaines paléogéographiques différents : les Charentes (stratotype du Campanien en domaine téthysien) et le Limbourg belgo-néerlandais (stratotype du Maastrichtien en domaine boréal). La limite préalablement adoptée est celle d'un étage Maastrichtien débutant avec l'apparition de Belemnella lan-ceolata. La distribution verticale, au niveau de la limite, de macro et de microfossiles sélectionnés est discutée pour les deux régions et présentée sur un tableau. Il s'avère que les microfossiles, tant benthiques que planctoniques, présentent un certain diachronisme dans les apparitions ou extinctions d'espèces, phénomène dont il faut tenir compte quand on veut procéder à des corrélations entre des sections appartenant à des provinces paléogéographiques différentes.
