Dans le stratotype historique de l'Aptien inférieur les teneurs en carbone organique total sont basses, sauf dans la partie basale, barrémienne, comportant des niveaux de black shales. Les éléments plane-toniques marins dominent, les éléments continentaux ne se manifestant de manière significative qu'au sommet du Bédoulien. Les black shales sont enrichis en métaux et ont un indice d'hydrogène élevé. L'équivalent chronologique du Niveau Goguel vocontien, expression régionale de l'événement global OAE la, ne montre pas ici d'enrichissement en carbone organique. Un fort contraste existe donc entre les sédiments de Cassis-La Bédoule et ceux du Bassin vocontien. Les niveaux de black-shales ponctuent la séquence de drowning, du Bar-rémien terminal, dont la mise en place traduit une géodynamqiue contrôlée principalement par des facteurs régionaux, à l'origine du sillon Sud-Provençal (bassin intra-shelf).
