Forty years after the Orlando Ribeiro’s work on Portuguese olive oil sector, in which the famous Portuguese geographer deplorably made the announce of its decline, it seems that this olive oil sector has finally come through the crisis that was then in motion, even if it only has been possible by a real change. This recovery is intimately linked with the historical olive oil culture which exists in the entire Portuguese society and every Portuguese’s mind. In fact beyond the agricultural fact, the olive-growing and the olive oil sector is, in Portugal, a real crucible of meanings and symbols which helped it to be an important actor on the current international olive oil market.

Quarante ans après les travaux d’Orlando Ribeiro portant sur l’oléiculture portugaise, dans laquelle le célèbre géographe portugais fait l’annonce malheureuse de son déclin prochain, il semble que le secteur oléicole portugais ait su traverser la crise qui l’attendait alors, sans toutefois en sortir complètement indemne. La relève de ce secteur semble intrinsèquement liée à la culture oléicole existant au Portugal, culture historique trouvant ses échos dans la société et la conscience collective portugaise contemporaine. Au-delà d’une simple culture agricole, l’oléiculture constitue en effet au Portugal un véritable signifiant culturel, ce qui lui a permis de retrouver une place certaine sur le marché oléicole international.
