On the basis of the terminology which the orientalist Adrien Reland (1676-1718) used to refer to analogy (the convenientia between various elements from different languages or from the same idiom) the author describes the construction of a critical method aiming at specifying the relevant compariso. n. One given correspondance may be simply neutrally noted; however there are criteria which allow the hypothesis of a cognatio (between words rather than between languages), an identity, or family relationship: these can be, geographical neighbourood, a special attention to the specifie realities that are referred to, the priority given to a certain kind of basic vocabulary, a qualification of the relationships which signal the belonging of a word to a given language, and so on. The attempt is hindered by the reference (even a formaI one) to hebrew as the mother language and the weakness of phonetic rules. The prominent feeling is that language is built upon a network of hidden correspondences. Through the hesitations and mutations of the terminology, however, then emerges a concern for coherence grounded in common sense. Reland's work may be ranked among the preliminaries necessary to the formation of scientific comparative linguistics.

A partir du vocabulaire utilisé par l'orientaliste Adrien Reland (1676-1718) pour désigner l'analogie, la convenientia entre éléments de différentes langues ou d'un même parler, on montre comment s'ébauche une méthode critique visant à déterminer les rapprochements pertinents. Si la correspondance peut être enregistrée de manière neutre, des critères permettent de supposer une cognatio (entre mots plutôt qu'entre langues), un rapport d'identité ou d'apparentement: proximité géographique, attention aux réalités spécifiques qui sont désignées, primat d'un certain type de vocabulaire de base, respect des relations qui inscrivent tel mot à l'intérieur de telle langu, e, etc. La référence à l'hébreu-langue mère (même formelle) et la timidité des règles phonétiques proposées limitent l'entreprise. Le sentiment qui domine est celui d'un langage tissé d'occultes correspondances. Mais un souci de rigueur, commandé par un solide bon sens, se fait jour, dans les incertitudes et l'évolution de l'expression. L'oeuvre de Reland prend place parmi les préliminaires indispensables à la constitution d'un comparatisme scientifique.
