The concept of signification in J.-C. Scaliger

: The present article attempts to show how I. C. Scaliger's concept of signification is based on philosophical trends which were common in the sixteenth century. It is shown that Scaliger is an eclectic, but that he by and large confines his eclecticism to various types of Àristotelianism. Scotism is among the more noticeabie trends, but many other tendencies are in evidence. The article illustrates how · grammatical speculation remained closely in contact. with the scholastic philosophy taught in the academic institutions. Scaliger appears to have a constant but inconsistent concept of signification, the main inconsistency being between its epistemological foundation and the role ascribed to usus.

RÉSUMÉ: Le présent article se propose de démontrer que le concept de signification utilisé par Jules César Scaliger (1484-1558) trouve son origine dans des courants philosophiques largement répandus au seizième siècle. Scaliger est un éclectique, mais limite grosso modo son éclectisme à diverses formes d'aristotélisme. Le scotisme fait partie des influences les plus évidentes, mais on peut · en relever de nombreuses autreCi. L'article souligne le fait que la spéculation grammaticale resta en contact étroit avec la philosophie scolastique enseignée dans les institutions académiques. Il apparaît que Scaliger a un concept de signification constant, mais flou, la principale contradiction se manifestant entre son fondement épistémologique et le rôle assigné à l'usus.
