The Concept of Syntax in Anton Marty's Philosophy of Language

: Aim of this article is to bring to light the connection between Marty's concept of syntax and his theory of language as a communicative tool. Tools have to be both handly and adequate for the ends they aim; in the first paragraph, we point out these two aspects which characterize the nature of the syntactical instrument. The same duality is find out in Marty's project of a general grammar (§2) and at the root of the distinction between the two different kinds of synsemantic terms (§ 3).

RÉSUMÉ: Le but de cet article est d'éclaircir les rapports entre la conception de syntaxe de Marty et sa théorie de langage comme instrument de communication. D'une part, les instruments doivent être maniables, de l'autre, adaptés à l'utilisation qu'on désire en faire: dans le premier paragraphe, on démontre donc comment ces deux moments caractérisent l'instrument syntaxique. La même dualité se découvre ensuite (§2) dans le projet de Marty d'une grammaire générale et aux origines de la distinction entre les deux sortes d'expressions synsémantiques (§ 3).
