: Criticizing the traditional representationism of the standard theory of the cognitive sciences according to which cognition is a representation of the outside world and language represents this representation in order to communicate it to others, the Chilean biologists Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela have developed a language theory which is in many respects close to Humboldt's. The paper tries to confront Humboldt's conception of the « labor of the spirit » with Maturana and Varela's theory a vision of language as « a dance of behavioral coordination ».

RÉSUMÉ : En critiquant le représentationnisme traditionnel de la théorie cognitiviste standard selon laquelle la cognition serait une représentation du monde extérieur et le langage aurait comme fonction de représenter cette représentation pour ensuite la communiquer aux autres, les biologues chiléens Humberto Maturana et Francisco Varela ont développé une conception du langage qui, sous maints égards, se rapproche de celle de Humboldt. L'article tâche de confronter la conception humboldtienne du « travail de l'esprit » avec la théorie de Maturana et Varela qui dissout radicalement toute représentation dans une « danse de la coordination ».
