Jean Daviet, « Saint-Gobain et l'industrie de la glace : l'innovation dans un vieux secteur », Histoire, économie & société (documents), ID : 10.3406/hes.1987.1448
The paper presents a study of the plate-glass industry carried out by Saint-Gobain since 1665, including some comparisons with the parallel history of Pilkington. The first part in an approach of the company actors in their roles, the second one is devoted to the firm system as a center of decision and creation in the middle of market forces. In the first part, four periods are distinguished : the ages of the 1 8th century Manufacture, of the First Industrialization, of the Second Industrialization, of Cybernetics. For each of them, the work organization and the conditions for the flourishing of technical culture explain specific processes of innovation. The second part focuses light on three topics of a supply-side analysis : the competitive oligopoly, the firms strategy and the transaction cost of technical progress.
