Pendant la période 1928-1938, la Montecatini commence la production d'aluminium par un nouvel établissement dans la plaine de la Val Lagarina, près de Trente. Après peu, il passe une très grave pollution par les émissions de fluorine et la population demande des indemnisations et la suspension de la production. Le refus des autorités et de la direction de l'établissement provoquent deux révoltes. La principale question historique qui surgit c'est donc si il existe une conscience populaire de l'environnement. En outre, à propos de la méthode historique adoptée, on croit que seule l'interdisciplinarité peut donner des bonnes chances d'interpréter la complexité des problèmes de l'environnement et de sa dynamique.
