Claude Cailly. A contribution to the definition of a proto-industrial production mode. This article is meant to bring a new contribution to the theory of proto-industrialisation initialized by Franklin Mendels giving a new explanation for the economical transition in the 18th and 19th centuries in developed countries. This problematics implies to define and measure the concept by showing the methodological and epistemologjcal difficulties it raises, and then to suggest a definition of a proto-industrial production mode, a production mode of the transition based on specific social relationships and containing in embryo the features of the capitalist production mode. Overcoming Mendel's prospects, the author adopts here a definition of proto-industrialisation both wider and more restrictive than the one suggested by the promoters of the model.

Cet article a pour objet d'apporter une nouvelle contribution à la théorie de la proto-industrialisation initialisée par Franklin Mendels donnant une nouvelle explication de la transition économique aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles dans les pays développés. Cette problématique suppose de définir et de mesurer le concept en présentant les difficultés d'ordre méthodologique et épistémologique qu'il soulève, puis de proposer une définition d'un mode de production proto-industriel, mode de production de la transition reposant sur des rapports sociaux spécifiques et contenant en germe les caractéristiques du mode de production capitaliste. Renversant les perspectives mendelsiennes, l'auteur adopte ici une définition à la fois plus large et plus restrictive de la proto-industrialisation que celle proposée par les promoteurs du modèle.
