Résumé En

The marble MA 441 in the Louvre and the Apollo Sauroctone-type copies The copy of the Apollo Sauroctone in the Musée du Louvre, from the Borghese Collection, has been the subject of a detailed technical study in the perspective of a cleaning and a possible restoration. The comparison with the other known copies allows one to judge the exceptional qualities of the ancient and modern restorations of the Louvre copy. It should be used as the reference in the study of the Apollo Sauroctone carved type, in preference to the replicas in the Vatican and in the Villa Albani. The attempts to define the original type of the Apollo Sauroctone from the comparison of the copies are doomed to failure as long as the exact nature of the restorations is not taken into account.
